Straight and Narrow Counselling Service

Straight and Narrow Counselling Service

The Power in Change® Approach

Power in Change® is Straight and Narrow Counselling Service's flagship behavioural change program, developed to support individuals in understanding the factors that influence behaviour and building the insight, skills, and behavioural evidence required for lasting change.

Grounded in evidence-informed practice and delivered by qualified clinicians, the program combines practical psychoeducation, structured therapeutic interventions, reflective exercises, and individualised support. Power in Change is available through individual counselling, group programs, and secure online delivery across Australia for self-referred participants and those referred by legal representatives, employers, government agencies, health professionals, and community organisations.

Historical Factors

Understand the experiences, beliefs, relationships, and behavioural patterns that have shaped current behaviour. The focus is on developing insight, not assigning blame.

Power in Change®

Our Framework

Power in Change® follows a structured behavioural change framework that guides participants through three progressive stages, helping individuals understand their past, develop insight into their present, and build the skills required for lasting behavioural change.

Present Insight

Develop awareness of the connection between identity, values, beliefs, emotions, thinking patterns, decision-making, and behaviour to identify opportunities for positive change.

Future Focus

Build practical skills, strengthen emotional regulation, and develop behaviours that align with personal values, goals, and the person participants want to become.

Power in Change®

Our Philosophy

Power in Change® is founded on the belief that lasting behavioural change is achieved through understanding and action. The program combines evidence-informed therapeutic practice with structured behavioural interventions to help individuals develop insight, strengthen personal accountability, and build the practical skills required for meaningful, sustainable change. Rather than focusing solely on behaviours or symptoms, the program explores the factors that influence behaviour and supports participants to translate insight into purposeful, values-aligned action.

Power in Change®

Program Structure

Power in Change® is delivered through a structured six-phase program that progressively develops insight, practical skills, and behavioural change. Each phase builds upon the previous one, supporting participants from understanding behavioural patterns through to long-term behavioural stability and reintegration.

Power in Change® comprises 15 core behavioural change modules, with specialised modules delivered where clinically indicated to address individual treatment needs.

Power in Change®

How the Online Program Works

Power in Change® Online is designed to provide the same structured behavioural change experience as face-to-face delivery while allowing participants to complete the program from anywhere in Australia.

Following enrolment, participants receive secure access to the online learning platform, which includes the complete Power in Change® program, professionally developed video modules, the participant workbook, and guided worksheets.

The program is completed one module at a time. Participants begin by watching the video presentation before completing the associated workbook activities, reflective exercises, and practical worksheets. Once completed, the worksheets are submitted to their allocated clinician for review.

Participants then attend a scheduled one-hour individual clinical session for each completed module. During these sessions, the clinician reviews the submitted workbook activities, explores the participant's understanding of the module content, assesses insight, engagement, and behavioural application, provides individualised clinical feedback, and supports the practical integration of learning into the participant's own circumstances and future decision-making.

This structured process is repeated across all 15 modules, ensuring participants remain actively engaged throughout the program rather than simply completing online content. Progress is monitored at each stage, allowing behavioural change to be demonstrated through reflection, discussion, practical application, and the development of behavioural evidence over time.

Where requested and agreed, progress reports may be prepared during the program to provide authorised referring organisations with updates regarding participation, engagement, and demonstrated progress.

Upon successful completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion. Where requested, a comprehensive clinical completion report may also be prepared, summarising participation, engagement, demonstrated insight, behavioural development, and recommendations for ongoing support.

Reports can be provided to authorised referring organisations, including employers, legal representatives, parole authorities, child safety services, and other government agencies, where appropriate.
